Medicare and Social Security: What Florida Seniors Need to Know

How Medicare Part B Premiums Are Deducted

If you're receiving Social Security benefits when you enroll in Medicare Part B, your Part B premium ($185/month in 2026) is automatically deducted from your Social Security check. You never receive a separate bill.

If you're not yet collecting Social Security when you enroll in Medicare, you'll receive a quarterly bill directly from Medicare. You can also set up automatic bank payments through your Medicare account at medicare.gov.

Enrolling in Medicare When You Start Social Security at 65

If you start Social Security benefits at age 65, you're automatically enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B β€” no separate application required. You'll receive your Medicare card approximately 3 months before your 65th birthday.

Important: Automatic Medicare enrollment means your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) begins on schedule. Use this window to enroll in Medigap with guaranteed acceptance.

Delaying Social Security β€” Medicare Implications

Many Florida seniors delay Social Security to age 70 to maximize their monthly benefit. If you delay Social Security past 65, you are not automatically enrolled in Medicare β€” you must sign up manually.

You must actively enroll in Medicare Parts A and B during your Initial Enrollment Period even if you're not collecting Social Security. Missing this window results in permanent late enrollment penalties for Part B. Set a calendar reminder for 3 months before your 65th birthday regardless of your Social Security plans.

The Medicare Savings Programs: Florida Assistance

Florida seniors with limited income may qualify for Medicare Savings Programs that help pay Part B premiums, deductibles, and copays:

  • Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB): Pays Part A and B premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance
  • Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB): Pays Part B premium
  • Qualifying Individual (QI): Pays Part B premium (limited slots)

These programs are administered by Florida Medicaid. Contact the Florida Department of Elder Affairs or your local SHINE counselor to apply. Income and asset limits apply.
